2Using a System’s Approach to Quality & Performance Improvement

The day long learning focused on using the Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI) model as the framework for nursing home quality including an introduction to building foundational practices and overall quality improvement (QI).

The session identified and reviewed the QAPI elements and introduced their link to the QAPI self- assessment tool. In addition, the session reviewed the self-assessment tools use in assessing and developing focused improvement strategies.

2) Using Data to Drive Improvement

The session touched upon the basics for establishing plans for collecting, analyzing, and sharing data, choosing measures, benchmarks and targets. CASPER and Composite Measure Score were presented with a special focus on how to use data, how to drill it down to the resident level for assessing potential use of inappropriate antipsychotic medication.

3) Communication/Teamwork/Staff Stability

The session emphasized how information sharing, staff

stability, person centeredness drives performance. There was special focus on how effective communication/teamwork/staff stability can help with recognizing resident behaviors and addressing their needs prior to becoming problematic and initiating medication use.

4) Collaborative Problem Solving

The session stressed the relational coordination concept or how relationships determine outcomes. In addition to the significance of an organizational culture of shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect among care givers in the problem solving process.
